Volume licensing for Windows 8 is built upon Microsoft's existing Software Assurance model and maintains the same use rights. Volume licensing for Windows 8 includes no additional licensing requirements or increases in price. There are, however, two new features for organisations seeking more mobility or a Bring Your Own Device program through volume licensing for Windows 8: the Companion Subscription License (CSL) and Windows To Go.

Companion Subscription License (CSL): Organisations engaging in a Bring Your Own Device program that allow employees to bring a non-Windows device to work will require this additional license. Users operating companion PCs or companion Windows RT tablets will not need this license.

The CSL allows a total of four non-Windows mobile devices to be used per licensed user. CSLs can be tacked onto Windows 8 Professional Upgrade with Software Assurance, Windows Software Assurance (SA), Virtual Desktop Access or Intune licenses.

Windows To Go: This new feature essentially allows users to use their corporate desktop outside of work or at home, online or off, with a USB drive. Windows To Go also allows users to keep business-critical data off their other devices – once the USB drive is removed, the data is removed too, making this an option for BYOD scenarios. Organisations can get access to Windows to Go through Windows SA and a Virtual Desktop Access (VDA) license.
