Datacom Opens a Community Technical Centre in Malaysia

9/06/2009

Datacom SEA (M) Sdn Bhd together with its partner Yayasan Kajian dan Pembangunan Masyarakat (YKPM), led a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative and jointly launched a Community Technical Centre, in Selayang Prima, Malaysia.

This initiative was designed to raise ICT awareness and specifically internet awareness in the community by providing an introduction to training, computer skills and an understanding of how technology can transform lives.

“We believe that by providing the training and skills, we can partner with people in the community, to create social and economic opportunities that can help change people’s lives,” commented Kirsty Hunter, Managing Director, Datacom.

Hunter went on to say, “Datacom believes that ICT should be available to everyone, even to those who it is out of reach for.  As part of our CSR initiative to ‘Break the poverty cycle through technical knowledge’, we have partnered with focus to take ICT education and infrastructure straight to rural communities with the objective to provide ICT training opportunities to the underserved.”

“Utilizing the Microsoft Digital Literacy Curriculum and the e-learning module, we aspire to train the community and equip them with borderless knowledge of ICT to aid and improve their quality of life.”

Participants within the community who are interested to join the CTC program are welcome to register with YKPM for the free computer classes. Participants taking part in this program will go through a 1.5-hour computer lesson each week for 3 months. At the end of the program, participants will be awarded with a Digital Literacy Certificate.
